Elon Musk on the Model S Fire

Elon Musk:

For consumers concerned about fire risk, there should be absolutely zero doubt that it is safer to power a car with a battery than a large tank of highly flammable liquid.

Really admire the way Musk and Tesla respond to incidents like this. Clear, plain language.

Volvo Gave Away Their Most Important Invention To Save Lives

Volvo Gave Away Their Most Important Invention To Save Lives

It's hard to believe now in this age of lane-departure warning systems and radar-guided automatic braking, but once upon a time, safety in cars was kind of an afterthought. Volvo built their reputation on selling safer cars, but they gave away the most important safety device ever invented: the three-point seat belt.

Now That It’s in the Broadband Game, Google Flip-Flops on Network Neutrality

1 Comment and 3 Shares

So Google was for net neutrality, but no longer because it affects their broadband aspirations.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.

Anyway, don’t be evil.

This has nothing to do with 'network neutrality' and everything to do with prohibiting people running servers on their residential ISP connections, a completely rational position for Google to take. My default setting for Gruber re: things Googlish is: at least disingenuous, if not purposely deceptive.

Read the wired report then. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2013/07/google-neutrality/ they have certainly changed their position.

Regardless of your feelings on Gruber, this is a drastic change of position. Its hard to see this as anything but self serving.

Network Neutrality is about last mile providers wanting a taste, not about prohibiting running a commercial webserver on a residential line.

it certainly violates the ideals of network neutrality. You can't assume that someone running a server is doing it for commercial purposes anyway. This also doesn't really prevent anyone from running a server in their house, if they are technically savvy enough.

'Net Neutrality' implies ISPs treating packets equally - i.e. Comcast not throttling Netflix packets, or AT&T not throttling Skype. An ISP controlling its bandwidth load by disallowing a residential user from running a server offering bit torrent content has nothing to do with 'Net Neutrality'. It's called business.

Is not "deny tcp any any eq 80" outbound towards your customers, -exactly- not treating some packets equally? I also don't see anything in the article mentioning torrents at all, but good attempt there to make it the end-user seem like they were doing something illegal.

@AdamJacobMiller - A very imaginative parsing of my reply - I was referring to bandwidth, not legality. Anyway, I suspect we will simply have to agree to disagree. Enjoy the day.

It has everything to do with it. Whether I'm hosting a game, sharing photos with my grandfather, or self hosting my blog, I should be allowed to do what I want with my bandwidth that I purchased. If the provider can't handle my use of the bandwidth they sold me, then don't sell such a large package! Offering unlimited 1gbps and complain that people use it is just asinine.

Wanted: Young Creation Scientists

Jake Hebert, writing for the Institute for Creation Research:

ICR, together with the rest of the creation science movement, has made great strides in the last 40 years. In many areas, the superiority of the creation worldview has been clearly demonstrated. Even now, ICR is making exciting discoveries in the fields of biology and geology, and we have started new research initiatives in the field of astronomy. However, there is much work that still needs to be done, and this work is hindered by a lack of trained scientists.

Real shocker that trained scientists aren’t working for these guys. Shocker.

Victory Lap for Ask Patents

2 Comments and 3 Shares

Joel Spolsky:

My dream is that when big companies hear about how friggin’ easy it is to block a patent application, they’ll use Ask Patents to start messing with their competitors. How cool would it be if Apple, Samsung, Oracle and Google got into a Mexican Standoff on Ask Patents? If each of those companies had three or four engineers dedicating a few hours every day to picking off their competitors’ applications, the number of granted patents to those companies would grind to a halt. Wouldn’t that be something!

Dan Wineman:

Affordances are the baby to skeuomorphism’s bathwater. When they engage our instincts just right, they create an emotional bond, and the unfamiliar becomes inviting. Without them, it’s just pictures under glass.
